Choosing the Best Dog for Your Weather
We live in Colorado where the snow can get pretty deep. Our two Labs love the snow and usually are willing to endure the blistering heat in the summer in order to spend the winter playing in thier white wonderland. Here is a picture of our lab Diesel, who was having fun in a recent snow storm that gave us 21 inches.
My husband doesn’t mind the cold and the snow…in fact, he’s a lot like a lab in that respect. He prefers winter over the summer. That’s why our labs are a good fit for him. They spend the summer months in the cool basement and the winter months outside.
My Chihuahua, on the the other hand has the ability to stay indoors for several months during the winter and get his exercise inside the house by chasing a ball (or his foster brother) up and down the hallway. In the summer, he has the ability to withstand smoldering temperatures without sweating a bit. Here his is sunning himself in a sunspot-his favorite activity.
My Chihuahua and I get along just fine because I don’t like the cold and prefer admire the snow from inside the house. I love spending time outside in the summer months almost as much as he does.
When considering your next dog breed, please consider the weather in your area. In Colorado we have two extremes, which seem to suit our two very different breeds just fine. In the summer months, our Labs need lots of swimming time and in the winter, our Chihuahua needs us to help him burn off excess energy indoors.
